About BoardCheck
BoardCheck is a free keyboard tester and typing speed test that runs in your browser. It exists to answer one question quickly: does every key on this keyboard actually work?
What it does
Press any key and BoardCheck lights it up on an on-screen keyboard that matches your own. Every key you've pressed stays marked, so after a minute of pressing keys you can see at a glance which ones never registered. It's useful when you've bought a new or second-hand keyboard, after a spill, or when a key "seems" to be skipping.
- Eight layouts, from 40% to full size and including HHKB and 96%, in ANSI or ISO, so the screen matches the keyboard on your desk.
- Realistic keycaps with the legends printed the way keycap sets print them, from shifted symbols to modifier icons.
- A dead-key diagnosis that lists the keys that didn't register, ignoring the ones your operating system keeps for itself.
- A 30-second typing test with live speed and accuracy in a distraction-free view, and a results chart that shows your speed through the test and how it compares with your earlier tests.
- Ranks, levels and a leaderboard for people who like to track their progress, with color presets and sound packs that unlock as you level up.
- Keyboard sound packs and color presets inspired by popular keycap sets, plus a Customize mode for recoloring the case, groups of keys or single keys.
BoardCheck also runs as a Chrome extension, for testing straight from the browser toolbar, with the same layouts and color presets.
How it works
Everything happens in your browser. When you press a key, your browser reports which key it was, and BoardCheck highlights the matching key on screen. Nothing you press in the keyboard tester is sent to a server. You don't need an account. Signing in is only for saving typing test results, levels and settings across devices, and for appearing on the leaderboard.
Because BoardCheck works in a browser, it can only see the keys your browser receives. The Fn key and some system keys never reach a web page; the testing checklist explains how to check those another way.
Who makes it
BoardCheck is an independent project made by Sulce Studio, built by people who spend a lot of time at keyboards and wanted a fast, honest way to check one. We keep improving it based on feedback, so if something doesn't work the way you expect, or you'd like a feature, we'd like to hear about it.
How the site is funded
BoardCheck is free and is supported in two ways. The site shows ads served by Google AdSense. And when the keyboard tester finds keys that don't work, the "Keys not working?" panel suggests replacement keyboards; some of those links are affiliate links, which means BoardCheck may earn a commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you. Some products are featured at the top of the list, and some come with a discount code from a partner store.
